Fixing your fireplace or installing an insert
If your fireplace looks fine but heats poorly, that's normal, because a wood-burning fireplace is generally a very inefficient way to heat a home and drafts can pull warm air up the chimney. Trying to heat the whole house with one usually leaves the other rooms cooler, so an insert is often a better answer than rebuilding the old fireplace. If the firebox or chimney is cracked, though, I'd fix the masonry first, because an insert is only as good as the box it sits in.
